My wife, son, & I started our herd by purchasing animals (most of them as 500-700 lb calves) at the local sale barn and from area cattlemen. When we started, we really didn't know much about raising cattle. I grew up on a small farm that had cattle when I was little, but by the time I started school we had switched over to raising horses, a few chickens, and one litter of pigs (needless to say, that experiment didn't go as expected). Starting in the Fall of 2013 we have both Fall and Spring calves to support our locker beef customers throughout the year instead of just in the Fall/Winter.
